Celebrating Atlanta's Beer Icon
Atlantans already know the many charms of the Brick Store Pub, and now a new book by a former employee is seeking to spread the word of the stellar beer bar. Published earlier this month, Mary Jane Mahan’s “Love at the Pub” chronicles the rise of the Brick Store, from its opening back in 1997 in the intown suburb of Decatur to its current lofty standing among beer devotees.
You’ll find a story on the pub in The Beer Connoisseur’s soon-to-come inaugural issue, but in the meantime pick up a copy of the book to learn what goes into the creation of a true craft beer landmark. A news release with more info on the book follows.
Decatur, GA — After more than 12 years of serving fish and chips and the best beers in the world, the magic of the renowned Brick Store Pub and its local and regional influence will be shared worldwide through a historical homage book "Love at the Pub: An Insider’s Guide to Craftsmanship, Conversation, and Community at the Brick Store Pub," released 11.11.09 online at www.loveatthepub.com and Amazon.com.
“The instant success of the Brick Store back in 1997 became the tipping point for the City of Decatur’s economic revitalization. The relationship between the Pub and the neighborhood grew quickly into a stunning love affair that hasn’t quit,” says author and former employee Mary Jane Mahan.
“In fact, the Brick Store’s convivial atmosphere and authentic approach to properly serving world class beer attracted a huge metro-Atlanta following and way beyond to make it rated the #2 beer bar in the world (BeerAdvocate). It’s Mecca.”
"Love at the Pub" is a three-part tribute to warm craftsmanship, caring business philosophy and community soul as it flows through the four walls of the Brick Store Pub. From eloping couples to Belgian ale-drinking ministers to start-up magazines, hundreds of patron “Brick Stories” are weaved into a narration that imparts an aura as friendly as Cheers, as mystical as The Alchemist, and as cool as Apple. In addition to being a portal into a world of relaxed, open barstool conversation over great beer pints, "Love at the Pub" is an inspirational roadmap for anyone who yearns to own and operate a world-class beer bar.
“This book is a perfect snapshot of what our community-minded Pub is all about, and why it is unique as a bar,” says co-owner Dave Blanchard, who built the Brick Store with his two business partners on sweat equity and a baseball collection for collateral. “Beer is the greatest beverage in the world. Fortunately our concept came along just as the craft beer industry wave hit big, and we grew in our niche while remaining focused as a welcoming spot for the neighborhood.”
