Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout - Anderson Valley Brewing Co. - 92 Rating

Responses from Anderson Valley brewmaster Fal Allen.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
The original owner and original brewer; David Norfleet and Bill Harper – these two guys came up with the recipe. Although the recipe gets fine tuned every once in a while as crop years vary or equipment at the brewery is changed.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The smooth, silky mouthfeel.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Barney flats is the Boontling name for our local state park Hendy Woods.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
No, although I love this beer and it is one of my favorites for both drinking and cooking, it is a bit more robust than I would want as my only beer on a hot desert island.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Smooth round chocolate & coffee, with just a hint of smoke (ok, so that’s 11 words... again)

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
I don’t have a story but I can say that it is my favorite beer to use in a marinade for barbeque

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Barney Flats pairs really well with meat, especially roasted meats or BBQ, and its pair wonderfully with chocolate or dessert.
