FlyteCo Brewing Head Brewer Jason Slingsby Talks Fogged Out Hazy IPA

We spoke with FlyteCo Brewing Head Brewer Jason Slingsby about Fogged Out Hazy IPA.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
While I am responsible for all of the recipe creation and brewing here at FlyteCo, the inspiration for our beers usually comes from staff, customers and friends. In the case of Fogged Out, some of our close friends in the industry aggressively insisted that we change our tap lineup to include a hazy IPA for our opening weekend back in 2019. After some last-minute brew schedule changes, I picked out all my favorite citrus-forward hops and started dialing in the recipe of what would quickly become our best-selling beer!

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
For me, the aroma is everything with this beer. The second it pours out of the tap you get a blast of citrus and intense tropical notes. A bouquet of orange, grapefruit and mango takes over and very pleasantly engulfs you.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
When we first opened the brewery, we had a company team-building event at our local airport. The goal was to take some flights around the area and share our love of aviation with the staff. After 4-5 hours of waiting for the weather to clear, we canceled the flying and cracked open some beers instead. This hazy IPA was quickly named by one of our original employees to commemorate the day!

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
As much as I love this beer, it might be a little intense for a desert island. While the tropical flavors are fitting, personally I would go with a crisp, light pilsner style beer to beat the heat and stay hydrated! That being said, this beer is consistently one of our taproom favorites, and I know a handful of regulars who would love to be trapped on an island with a Fogged Out keg!

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
I really enjoy pairing Fogged Out with Thai food. IPAs and spicy dishes generally go well together, but the added citrus profile from this beer really takes it over the top!
