Ivanhoe Park Brewing Co. Head Brewer Eric VanWormer Talks Urayasu Rice Lager

We spoke with Ivanhoe Park Brewing Co. Head Brewer Eric VanWormer about Urayasu Rice Lager.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I enjoy the flavor the most on this one. It carries a mild sweetness but gives a subtle bite with the Czech Saaz hops.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Urayasu is the name of the city in Japan, which is the sister city of Orlando, Florida and also where Tokyo Disney resides. We have had this beer featured in Japan at Epcot Food and Wine Festival and feel it has a great connection with that.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
This one definitely would be my "desert island beer." Given its super light body and crispness, this one can be enjoyed all day on the beach.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Urayasu Rice Lager has been really well received by even some of the more reputable chefs, such as at Morimoto and restaurants at Epcot Japan, and praised as one of the best authentic Japanese Rice Lagers they have enjoyed. We catch them in the taproom buying 4-packs to go, as well as having it on tap at their locations.

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
The most common food pairing is sushi, but this beer definitely goes well with most fish dishes or spicy foods.
