Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

The aroma of this Witbier presents vanilla and orange-peel zest undertones, a hint of sulfur, slight perfumes from hops and yeast esters, a touch of coriander, and a sweet wheat malt breadiness that all combine to provide a very nice olfactory presentation. As the sulfur dissipates, the other,... Read More

This was judged as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A) due to the use of coffee. The base style is a Russian Imperial Stout. A robust coffee aroma leaps out of the glass. Dark malts blend with the coffee as a rich chocolate and roasty undertone; hints of caramel, vanilla, and alcohol... Read More

Scorpion Bowl IPA

Scorpion Bowl IPA

California
United States
Stone Scorpion Bowl IPA, Stone Brewing
Description

To create a recipe so tropical and fruity without the addition of fruit was no feat Stone's team of brewers would leave up to the gods. They took floral and citrus notes from Mosaic, Loral and Mandarina Bavaria hops to dish up a mouthwatering fruit punch to the palate. Get deserted on your own island or share with others. One thing is for sure: there is no need to light this one. It is already on fire.

Scorpion Bowl IPA by Stone Brewing Co. was judged as an American IPA (21A). The aroma is quite subdued for an IPA with hop notes that are floral and herbal, surprisingly noble hop-like, with some resinous qualities mixed in as well. Some malt sweetness with very low graininess can be detected in... Read More

Low & Slow Helles by Westbrook Brewing Co. was judged as a Munich Helles (4A). The aroma has the grainy-sweet quality desired in a Heller lager with just a hint of noble hop herbal character. The appearance is bright pale-gold with a light, persistent off-white head. The hop flavor asserts... Read More

This beer pours a very bright pale copper. It has a thin, off-white head that lingers on the edge of the glass. The aroma evinces mild perfume notes (rose) and various fruits (strawberry, pear). Also, a very subtle wood aroma is detectable, possibly from the hops. The malt is indistinct, but... Read More
