Great Juju

The last time I wrote the words “ginger spice”, the year was 1997, and the words were capitalized. 

Spiceworld had just dropped, and my Adam’s apple was soon to follow.

Today, I’ve reclaimed that fleeting feeling of profound discovery with Left Hand Brewing’s Great Juju, a ginger-spiced pale ale, and the Imperial next-of-kin to their Good Juju. 

I could go on, but it would suffice to say that this beer is no “Wannabe.”

Valley Homebrew and the Shenandoah Valley Homebrewers Guild present The Third Annual Hop Blossom Homebrew Competition.

Work on planning the Hop Blossom Homebrew Competition for 2015 is well underway! The Competition/Judging Date is set for Saturday May 30th @ Brewbakers Restaurant.

We are currently accepting volunteers to help us Judge as well as Steward the day of the Competition and will be doing so until 5/25/15 (the sooner the better). So, if you can help that day, please let us know by signing up on the website.

Natty Greene's -- Southern Pale Ale

This Greensboro, North Carolina beer hits the mark. The idea was to showcase Cascade hops with the citrusy element marked by a touch of pine.

A bit darker than one might expect for a pale ale, there’s also more of a malty back story to the staging of the hops than one might expect in this style.

A few sips from the bottle or a glass tells you why Chris Lester and Kayne Fisher have grown their production brewery to 20,000 barrels a year since establishing Natty Greene’s in 2004 on the heels of their successful restaurant businesses.

AB Apologizes for Bud Light Slogan After Social Media Frenzy

Anheuser-Busch has apologized for a highly insensitive scroll message found on some of its Bud Light bottles.

The message found on the bottom of the label reads, "The perfect beer for removing 'no' from your vocabulary for the night."

Social media erupted with angry demands for the removal of the offensive slogan, which seemed completely tone-deaf to the issue of date rape that has become a focus of controversy on college campuses nationwide.

Don't Worry, Brie Happy

Sherry Dryja, Grilled Brie Sandwich with Apples and Caramel Walnuts

The American grilled cheese sandwich is quintessential comfort food. All you need is a couple of pieces of buttered bread, some shredded cheddar, and a hot skillet to melt the blues of a hard day. Add some tomato soup on the side and the world suddenly looks level again.

Maybe that’s why my mother, a retired elementary school principal, made a face and leaned away from me when I offered her some of the brie I intended for an updated version of the old classic. “You know I don’t like to experiment,” she said.

Both she and my mother-in-law, Lucy, were in my kitchen to help test recipes, but I was asking them to take a couple of steps outside their comfort zones. These were women who had raised their families on comfort-food classics. My mother’s fried chicken and gravy, for example, is legendary and Lucy, who came to the States from Poland after World War II, taught me how to make sausage with “cheap hamburger” and liquid smoke. They had no reason to try brie on grilled cheese, much less add apples and caramel walnuts to the mix. What they had done for years worked.

Thankfully, both mothers, fathers, and spouse, too, for that matter, were good sports. Even though they initially thought the brie by itself “didn’t taste like anything,” when I topped it with apples and caramel walnuts, and grilled it until it melted over buttered homemade bread, the entire table sang in unison their delight and surprise.

Searching through our ample beer fridge for today’s Pint Break, I spotted the perfect subject: New Belgium’s Slow Ride Session IPA!

First released in January, this sessionable 4.5 percent ABV brew is an excellent accompaniment to a sultry spring day or a quiet office cubicle. Eight hop varietals (with Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin top-billed) provide citrusy bursts of fruitiness in both the flavor and aroma. The low alcohol content could fool some people, easily making anyone a “Fool for the City.”

Brooklyn Brewery Announces Second International Expansion

Brooklyn Brewery will partner with Norwegian brewery E.C. Dahls, owned by the Carlsberg Group to build a new expansion brewery and restaurant in Trondheim, Norway in 2016. This is Brooklyn Brewery’s second collaboration with Carlsberg, after teaming up to build the New Carnegie Brewery, a craft brewery in Stockholm, last year.
