Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Snag & Drop by Cape May Brewing refers to itself as a Triple IPA, but this doesn’t exist under the BJCP guidelines, therefore it falls under the high end of a Double IPA and will be judged as such by BJCP 2015 Category 22A. It meets all of the parameters of the double IPA, just a bit boozier... Read More

Insufficient Clearance IPA by Sketchbook Brewing Co. is an IPA that best fits under the BJCP category 21B for specialty IPA as a New England style. This style separates itself from the normal American IPA by its excessive haze, low bitterness, soft mouthfeel and juicy-forward hops. This beer... Read More

Bizarre Gardening Accident by Motorworks Brewing is a Berliner weisse (BJCP 2015 Category 23A), but the addition of passion fruit and lime push it into Fruit Beer (29A). The category is quite fitting as the fruit is apparent throughout the beer. It pours a hazy (normal for style due to heavy... Read More

You either love or loathe pumpkin beer season – there’s no in-between. Unfortunately for this beer, I’m of the latter. I’m not sure when most pumpkin beers became straight spice beers, but I wish they’d be as they sound: A beer with some actual pumpkin in it. This pumpkin porter unquestionably... Read More

This beer pours a light golden color with good clarity, just a bit of haze and a dense white head that lasts and lasts. The aroma seemed fairly mild for a DIPA and lacked the pungency expected. There was a light grainy/doughy malt and still plenty of hops to it, but moreso onion, garlic, herbal... Read More
