Beer Judge

Jason Johnson has been homebrewing since 2000 and a ranked judge with the BJCP since 2005. He currently holds the rank of National Judge. Jason was the Co-founder and Co-Host of Brewnology: The Podcast where they explored all avenues of Beer Judging for their listeners. Although the show had a good 2 year run, they ran out of judging content at 50 shows and had to call it quits. Past episodes of Brewnology can still be found on YouTube. Jason is also the author of an e-book titled Roasted: A Homebrewer's Guide to Homeroasting Grain.

Although currently an independent homebrewer no longer active in a local club, Jason was a member of the Manty Malter's homebrew club in, Wisconsin. Jason has held several officer positions within the club including president as well as lead the club's judging education program. He also has a set of free BJCP Prep classes on YouTube to help judges who may not have a nearby club to supplement their self-study. He also helps these people by answering questions via messages. So far the course has been fairly popular and helped some judges in other countries study for their exams.

As a brewer, Jason mostly likes to brew traditional classic styles. He brews a lot of American ales (America Pale Ales, American IPA, and American Pre-Prohibition Lager). Other styles he likes to brew are Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, Belgian Wit, Saison, Dubbel, and Cream Ale to name a few. As far as craft beer goes, he enjoys tasting and Judging the full gambit of the beer spectrum.

Fluffy Otter by Pontoon Brewing was judged as 30A, Spice/Herb/Vegetable beer because of the vanilla. I know there could be some debate about adding it to 31B, alternative sugar beer because of the marshmallow but aside from adding some sugar to the beer the marshmallow itself is not so much a... The beer pours a soft hazy copper color with pinkish-red highlights and a well-formed head. Up front in the aroma you get blackberries followed by some doughy/bready wheat, and a hint of sour. Don’t expect much from the hops in this style. Regarding the flavor, you are taken on an interesting... Read More

The very approachable and non-threatening aroma features moderate orange-y citrus hop character, and some low notes of fresh, zesty tangerine are noticeable. The malt aroma is slightly sweet with a just a touch of caramel aroma. The color is light gold with excellent clarity. The off-white head... Read More

The beer pours a deep ruby red, with a half-inch thick, brownish-pink head sitting atop that disappeared quickly. There is a little bit of haze -- it’s clear but not brilliantly clear. The aroma is heavy with tart cherries, which is to be expected for the style. I do pick up a moderate amount of... Read More

This beer is a Wild Specialty Beer fitting well into the BJCP category 28C. This category is for sour and/or funky version of a fruit, or spice beer, or a wild beer aged in wood. If wood-aged, the wood should not be the primary or dominant character.

I love the color of this beer. It... Read More

SeaBee Gose by Big Boss Brewing Co. was judged as a standard Gose, one of the beers in the BJCP category 27, Historical beer. You can usually expect them to be lightly tart with a mild underlying salinity. Where I live we have a rich submarine history, so I’m familiar with what Seabee is, so I... Read More
